Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for Dementia Researchers, 2015–2024

Ten annual data files from 2015–2024 using the full-year BRFSS with select variables related to cognitive functioning. Datasets use a series of self-reported measures on cognitive limitations to identify respondents with potential cognitive issues. Datasets also include sociodemographic characteristics, state FIPS codes (to make state level estimates), and caregiver module to identify individuals reporting offering care to individuals living with dementia.  Visit the repository for this project to find lists of included states for each year and module, detailed descriptions of the datasets, data files (in SAS, Stata, and CSV formats), codebooks, and programming scripts (Stata).

Nationally Representative Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Cognitive Decline and Caregiver Datasets, 2019–2022

This code and corresponding data files are intended for use in cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) research. The two datasets include the most recently available data from each state during 2019–2022 where a US state participated in either the Cognitive Decline Module or the Caregiver Module.   All data are derived from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Both datasets include: cleaned sociodemographic information on respondents’ state, age, sex, race, education, and marital status; general, mental, and physical health; and questions from either the Caregiver Module or the Cognitive Decline Module for all states who participated in the respective optional module. Visit the repository for this project to find lists of included states for each year and module, detailed descriptions of the datasets, data files (in SAS, Stata, and CSV formats), codebooks, and programming scripts (Stata).
