This study, published in JMIR Aging aimed to assess caregiver availability and type for hospitalized patients with dementia by analyzing medical notes using natural language processing (NLP). The study developed rules to identify mentions of caregivers in medical notes, distinguishing between informal caregivers (such as family or friends) and formal caregivers (such as paid professionals). By analyzing medical records, the researchers were able to determine whether patients lived at home or in institutional settings.
Utilizing NLP to extract caregiver information from medical records can enhance care coordination and support for hospitalized patients with dementia by identifying available caregivers and understanding patients’ living situations.
