In this episode, Donovan and Matt speak with Geoffrey Hoffman, a faculty member and researcher at the University of Michigan School of Nursing.

Dr. Hoffman discusses the transition to the role of caregiver for partners of persons diagnosed with dementia – and the unique emotional burden and stress that they undertake.  Dr. Hoffman also discusses using the Health & Retirement Study (HRS) to better explore the emotional stress and onset of depression in caregivers.

Dr. Hoffman was the senior author of the study titled, “Depressive Symptoms and Caregiving Intensity Before and After Onset of Dementia in Partners”, that was published in the journal Medical Care. The study used data from the Health and Retirement Study, and was co-authored with his colleague, Melissa Harris, who is currently a scholar in the National Clinician Scholars Program at Duke University.
